How to break the all-or-nothing mindset and build real consistency.

We’ve all said it:

“I’ll start over Monday.”

Or next month.

Or after the summer chaos settles.

But here’s what I’ve learned, both personally and through coaching others:

You don’t need to start over.

You just need to keep going.

The All-Or-Nothing Mindset Keeps You Stuck

When I first started in the training world—building my business from the ground up—I left my schedule wide open. I mean wide open.

Anyone could book me, anytime. I was getting by, helping people, doing what I loved, with a sometimes spread out sporadic schedule and sometimes booked back to back to back with just enough space to squeeze in a protein drink/bar here and there. Behind the scenes? I was socially and physically exhausted. I didn’t have the energy or desire to squeeze in a lift after spending all day at the gym and I definitely didn’t want to hang out another hour away from home. I was doing what I could. But I didn’t feel like me. At times feeling like a phony for coaching others to build consistency when I was lacking it myself because of letting life take over.

The Shift: I Stopped “Starting Over” and Started Scheduling Myself

What changed everything for me?

I started treating my own workouts like appointments—non-negotiables on my calendar. Just like my clients get their dedicated slots, I gave myself the same respect.

I even went one step further and hired an in-person trainer.

  • Tuesday: weight training with my coach Alex Baird
  • Thursday: boxing with my coach DeShawn
These appointments helped me show up because I’m a person of integrity—I don’t flake on people. That matters. If you’re the kind of person who shows up more for others than yourself, build your schedule with that in mind.

Make It Personal: "This is my class."

Another tactic that’s worked?

Telling the instructor, “This is my class. I’ll be here every week.”

I said it to Stacey, who teaches my Wednesday night Power yoga. I said it to Natalie G at Mojo Cycling when I started spin. It changed everything—because it gave me ownership. It created accountability without pressure.

Try it: Pick a class you love, tell the instructor you’re committing to it, and block it in your calendar like you would a meeting or a dentist appointment.

No rescheduling. No “if I have time.” Just your time.

If you're consistent enough with this the instructor will respect it and believe you AND even shoot you a little "Where you at?!" text if you're running a bit behind LOL (Stacey).

Remember Who You Are (or Who You're Becoming)

For me, accountability has always been rooted in relationships:

  • My high school and college teammates
  • My lifting partner Vanessa during grad school
  • My current community of lifters, clients, and coaches

But more than that, it’s rooted in identity.

I’m a person who trains.

That’s my narrative—and I stay true to it.

Even if Monday goes off the rails? I move my workout to Tuesday.

Even if the week gets slammed? I reclaim the weekend.

Because this is what I do. Not perfectly, but consistently.

The Difference Between Who You Are and Who You Want to Be…

…is what you do.

That’s my favorite mantra. It grounds me in action—especially when life feels chaotic.

You don’t need to start over.

You just need to keep going.

Maybe that looks like three workouts a week.

Maybe that looks like finally scheduling something just for yourself.

Maybe that means joining a program where the plan is already built, and all you have to do is show up (cue the Tapp'd In: Strong Looks Good On You Program).
